We evaluated the leading small-business accounting platforms against six criteria: core bookkeeping depth (double-entry, bank reconciliation, reporting), invoicing and payments, payroll and tax handling, integrations, pricing per user, and how easily an outside accountant can plug in.
QuickBooks Online takes Best Overall for the third year running — no other tool matches its accountant network and integration ecosystem in the US. Xero wins Best for Growing Teams thanks to unlimited users on every plan and cleaner multi-currency work. FreshBooks is the Best Value pick for freelancers and service businesses where invoicing and time tracking are the whole job.

Visit WaveQuickBooks Online is our 2026 pick for most small businesses: it has the broadest feature set, the largest accountant/bookkeeper network in the US, and integrations with virtually every payroll, payments, and e-commerce tool. Xero is a very close second and often the better fit for teams that need unlimited users.
Choose QuickBooks if you're US-based, want the deepest ecosystem of add-ons, and expect your accountant to already know the product. Choose Xero if you need unlimited users on every plan, cleaner multi-currency handling, or you're outside the US where Xero's regional support is stronger.
For solo freelancers and service businesses that mostly bill by project or hour, FreshBooks is easier to run day-to-day — invoicing, estimates, time tracking, and client portals are its core. QuickBooks becomes the better pick once you add employees, inventory, or complex reporting.
Wave is genuinely free for invoicing and basic bookkeeping and is a fine starting point for very small operations. Once you need payroll, receipts capture, or accountant collaboration, moving to QuickBooks, Xero, or FreshBooks pays for itself quickly.
